View across the hills - Oct 2010 |
It was -2 this morning on our hillside in the Brecon Beacons. Somewhat chilly, and the grass is all twinkly after Jack Frosts' handy work. The ground is slightly frozen so until the sun warms things up a little we can't dig the soil and add manure to our plots. So, in the meantime we'll be raking and collecting up lots of leaves to make leaf compost/mould.
It's such a simple process to make leaf mould - grab a big bin bag or something similar, punch a few holes into it (we use a garden fork and stab it a few times into the plastic) then stuff the bag full of leaves. Sprinkle the leaves with water. Tie the top of the bag and then leave the whole thing in a shady corner of the garden/plot. By this time next year you should have a lovely crumbly mixture which is perfect for using as a mulch around your plants.
On the flower front.... we are still preparing for Christmas. Fortunately we have lots of lovely Holly and Ivy to hand here on the farm and it looks to be full of berries this year. Along with Lichen and Moss we have a ready supply of natural materials which we will be using for our natural Christmas decorations.
We've also just had our first of the seasons Narcissi delivered from our friendly growers in Cornwall. So these beautiful flowers will be appearing in our seasonal flower bouquets and bunches over the next few weeks. Also appearing in our bunches and bouquets at the moment are: Chrysanthemums, Sedum, Anemones, Alstromeria and for an extra touch of seasonality we add Rose hips to our bouquets at this time of year.
Right, the sun has burnt off some of the frost so it's now time to peek out of the warmth and get on with some raking and gathering of leaves.
Bye for now.
